Giancarlo Piccin was born in Toronto, Canada to Italian immigrants Basilio and Lidia Piccin. The middle child of three, Giancarlo grew up near Dufferin and St. Clair where he loved playing hockey, but eventually found his true calling in art. Giancarlo went on to graduate from the renowned Ontario College Of Art, where he focused on fine art.
Upon graduating, Giancarlo immediately started working full time in visual arts. He has worked with graphic design, website building, silk screening, sculpture, signage, portraiture, murals, water colour, encaustic, oil, installations, curating and art direction, and he feels fortunate to have so many differnt expereinces to draw from for his work.
“I’ve always had a soft spot for the Italian High Renaissance. It may be the fact that I’m a Canadian of Italian heritage that draws me toward this period or because I find the impeccable craftsmanship and aesthetic quality of their work extremely appealing. My influences also include Rauschenberg, Johns, Dali, Hopper, Richter and Kiefer, primarily for how we see the world through their vision.”
“The challenge for any contemporary artist is to see the world through new eyes. It is important to me that an artist’s work reflects his time. Whether it is through the use of contemporary themes, techniques and/or mediums. The challenge is to present your generation with a new vision. I try to gain a good understanding of the past and present art scene to try and meet this challenge in an effort to represent my generation.”
“Ultimately, I investigate the relationship between people and their surroundings. My work usually begins with an abstract painting. I then explore the possibilities of people or architecture as my subject matter. By using colour and paint applications on successive layers, I encourage the viewer to connect missing elements to form complete images. Occasionally, I include found objects to further explore this relationship.”
An internationally collected artist, Piccin resides in the beautiful Heart Lake area of Brampton with his wife Marion and son, also named Giancarlo. He cheers on his beloved Maple Leafs, loves taking his son to art galleries and museums and still plays hockey with his friends every Saturday.
